Hey dear friends,
Tel Avivians think their city
is the most advanced in Israel
but they do not yet have
a light rail.
We in Jerusalem have a light rail and
I am standing at one of the light rail stations,
HaTurim Station
or as most people say
that’s also the name of the street here
and this area HaTurim
is named for the book
Four Columns by Rabbi Yaakov Ben Asher
who wrote this book
a few hundred years ago and the
book “Four Columns” is the basis for the
book Shulchan Aruch, which is the more well-known book
and all these are books of Halacha (Jewish law)
Now, why did Rabbi Yaakov Ben Asher call his book
Columns – “Four Columns”?
Because the breastplate – the breastplate of justice
the High Priest wore in the Temple
and in the Tabernacle, had four columns (well, actually rows)
of precious stones
and each stone symbolized
a different tribe of the tribes of Israel
So this is the basis of HaTurim – of the book “The Four Columns”
and therefore HaTurim Station in Jerusalem
