I have a friend named Shaanan
and I call him Shaanan Fanan
Which is actually a compliment, because פנאן
is something good, something fun
It really sounds like the word “fun”
in English, but it comes from Arabic
where the meaning of the word is artist
And there’s also a last name Fanan
There are lots of Jews from Arabic-speaking origin
whose last name is Fanan
It’s a bit funny to hear today
because פנאן is a sort of “fun”
“How was the trip?” “Wow, it was fun!”
There’s also a word opposite to פנאן
which is באסה, and it also comes from Arabic
which is like a disappointment, depression
And in Hebrew we use it
pretty much the same way – “how was the trip?”
“It wasn’t.” “That stinks.”
