how to say “lips” in Hebrew

שְׂפָתַיִם

Yesterday we saw examples of things that come in pairs, and that they get a special ah-yeem ending in Hebrew.

Here’s another example – שְׂפָתַיִם   , lips.

For example:

יֵשׁ לָהּ שְׂפָתַיִם אֲדֻמּוֹת.
She has red lips.

Why the doubling ending? Because a single lip is called a שָׂפָה    – the same word as that for language.

This shouldn’t surprise you, as a synonym for language in English is tongue, just as it is in Hebrew – לָשׁוׁן   .
