how to say “social network” in Hebrew

רֶשֶׁת חֶבְרָתִית

This one’s for EL – thanks for introducing me to The Social Network!

The aforementioned is the Oscar-winning film you’ve more than likely heard of, about Mark Zuckerberg and his monumental contribution to the world, Facebook.

My roommates and I found the movie exciting, even inspiring – we stayed up for a little while after the showing to discuss various business ideas.

Anyway, רֶשֶׁת (REH-shet) is the Biblical Hebrew word for net. Today the word includes the additional meanings of network and Internet (referred to unofficially as הָרֶשֶׁת – hah-REH-shet – the Net).

חֶבְרָתִי (khev-rah-TEE) in the masculine, or חֶבְרָתִית (khev-rah-TEET) in the feminine – means social. The root is ח.ב.ר (kh.b.r), meaning connection.

A social network is רֶשֶׁת חֶבְרָתִית (REH-shet khev-rah-TEET).
