If you’ve received an email before that you’ve forgotten or neglected to reply to, raise your hand. I, for one, know that you’re not alone.

To reply or to respond in Hebrew is לְהָגִיב (leh-hah-GHEEV). It can mean to reply to a message or to respond to someone else’s action. For example, הִיא הֵגִיבָה בַּחֲרִיפוּת לַהַאֲשָׁמוֹת שֶׁהוּטְחוּ נֶגְדָּה (hee heh-GHEE-vah bah-khah-ree-FOOT lah-hah-ah-shah-MOHT sheh-hoo-teh-KHOO neg-DAH) – she responded sharply to the accusations hurled against her.
להגיב is an active-causative הפעיל verb following the same pattern as the words לְהָבִין (leh-hah-VEEN) – to understand, and לְהָכִין (leh-hah-KHEEN) – to prepare. Its root is ג.ו.ב (g.w.b), and its source is Aramaic, with an Arabic cognate (same word, different language).
A response is a תְּגוּבָה (teh-goo-VAH).
