The Torah portion to be read this Shabbat by Jews around the world launches the ten plagues – G-d’s war with the ancient Egyptians, one of which involves hail – בָּרָד .
In Jerusalem this week, we saw not only ברד, but snow – שֶׁלֶג – as well.
So putting together the themes of war and cold stuff coming from the sky, I think it appropriate to introduce the Hebrew term for snowball fight.
The proper term is מִלְחֶמֶת כַּדּוּרֵי שֶׁלֶג , where מלחמת is the construct-סְמִיכוּת (of-relationship) form of the word מִלְחָמָה – war, and כַּדּוּרֵי is the construct form of כַּדּוּרִים – balls.
But more often, you’re likely to hear Israeli kids calling the activity simply מִלְחֶמֶת שֶׁלֶג – a war of snow – as featured in this week’s video.
