how to say “inside” in Hebrew

בִּפְנִים, בְּתוֹךְ

When I go to a cafe with table service in Israel, they ask me where I’d like to sit – בפנים או בחוץ?
outside or inside? (unless it’s raining, I say בחוץ
).

בפנים
means inside when it stands alone, as in:

כולם בפנים.

Everyone is inside.

But בתוך
means inside something – or inside of something.

For example:

הוא נמצא בתוך הבניין.

He (is located) inside the building.

בתוך can take on a pronoun ending, as in בתוכי
inside of me, בתוכנו
inside of us, etc.

Outside of is -מחוץ ל
, as in:

היא עומודת מחוץ לבניין.

She’s standing outside the building.
