Hi friends
raw onion, it has a spicy taste
now, I eat today spicy food with pleasure
but it used to be that I wouldn’t eat spicy food
how did I really start eating spicy?
I used to volunteer at an immigrant absorption center for olim from Ethiopia
and once I was invited to do a kiddush at one of the houses and was
served injera to eat
and injera comes with something called wat ወጥ
which is a type of sauce
often very spicy
now, I grew up in an Ashkenazi home
gefilte fish, schnitzel
these were our foods
I hadn’t eaten spicy my whole life
until I got to the absorption center
so I take a bite of the injera
and I start to feel – it’s really spicy
and they tell me, bila bila ብላ ብላ!
eat, eat! in Amharic
and I take another bite and I start to cry
and they say to me, bila bila bila!
and so I started eating spicy
today I eat spicy as well as injera
all with pleasure
