The Hebrew word for star – כוכב[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/כוכב-#.m4a” /] – appears as early as in Torah itself, while קולנוע[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/כוכב-#.m4a” /] – cinema – is a modern term combining two ancient Hebrew words: קול[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/כוכב-#.m4a” /] – sound and נוע[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/כוכב-#.m4a” /] – movement; a movie is a moving picture… or moving sound.
Someone who stars in the cinemas is כוכב קולנוע[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/כוכב-#.m4a” /] if he’s male, and כוכבת קולנוע[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/כוכב-#.m4a” /] if she’s female.
For example:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/כוכב-#.m4a” /]היא גם כוכבת קולנוע וגם זמרת.
She’s both a movie star and a singer.
Admittedly, this term is a bit out of use. In tomorrow’s Dose of Hebrew we’ll talk about the more spoken term – celeb.
