The word אלפיים – two thousand, ends in “-ayim”
which is the dual form
meaning, things that come in two
get “-ayim” at the end like the word שניים-two
and the feminine form of שניים which is שתיים
but this “-ayim” doesn’t get added
to every noun
for example, we say מאתיים – two hundred
but we don’t say מליוניים (milionayim – two millions)
and we say משקפיים – glasses, and עיניים – eyes
but we don’t say חלוניים (two) windows when talking about two windows
How do you know when to use “-ayim” and when not?
There really is no rule – you’ll just start to feel it
as you learn more and more words in Hebrew
