Growing up in LA where Downtown is not exactly the center of the action, I wasn’t exposed to the concept of a city center until I traveled as an adult. Even visiting Tel Aviv, there was Dizengoff, but a city center? I didn’t quite get the concept until I saw Europe.
In Hebrew, the city center is מרכז העיר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/מרכז-העיר-1.m4a” /].
For example:

Let’s meet in Jerusalem at the city center.
מרכז העיר means literally, center of the city, where of is implied.
