The Ancient- as well as Modern-Hebrew word for to dig is לַחְפּוֹר ( listen and repeat), of the root ח.פ.ר (kh.p.r) and the active-simple פָּעַל verb form.

For example:

את חפירה יִצְחָק חָפַר בְּאֵרוֹת בַּנֶּגֶב.

Isaac dug wells in the Negev (southern desert portion of Israel).

The word לחפור is also used in Modern-Hebrew slang to mean to badger with lots and lots of questions.

For example:

הִיא חָפְרָה וְחָפְרָה עַד שֶׁהוּא קָם וְהָלַךְ.

She badgered and badgered until he got up and left.
