Yesterday I introduced the Hebrew word for flat – שָׁטוּח (shah-TOO-ahkh), which derives from the root ש.ט.ח (sh.t.kh) meaning spread out.
Another related word is that for superficial – something that remains on the surface. The Hebrew word is שִׁטְחִי (sheet-KHEE) in the masculine and שִׁטְחִית (sheet-KHEET) in the feminine. For example, כְּוִיָּה מַדְרֵגָה רִאשׁוֹנָה הִיא כְּוִיָּה שִׁטְחִית (keh-vee-YAH mahd-reh-GAH ree-shoh-NAH hee keh-vee-YAH sheet-KHEET) – a first degree burn is a superficial burn.
Likewise, superficiality is שִׁטְחִיּוּת (sheet-khee-YOOT).
