To put or to place something down, in Hebrew, is the simple פעל verb, לָשִׂים (lah-SEEM). Its root is שׂ.י.מ (s.y.m)
Applying that ancient Hebrew word to the commercial world of today, we get לְהָשׂים (leh-hah-SEEM) – to place a person in an organization, an active-causative הפעיל verb. The noun version of this verb, placement, is הֲשָׂמָה (hah-sah-MAH), and thus a placement company is a חֶבְרַת הֲשָׂמָה (khev-RAHT hah-sah-MAH).
The term השמה most often refers to placement in a job position. If you want to say placement exam for a particular level of a course, you’d use מִבְחַן רָמָה (meev-KHAHN rah-MAH) – literally, a test of level.
