While English has one basic word for to know, Hebrew has two: לדעת[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/היכרות-#.m4a” /] and להכיר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/היכרות-#.m4a” /]. And while לדעת, in Modern Hebrew, means to know information, להכיר means to know a person or to be familiar with someone or something.

Thus getting to know each other is היכרות[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/היכרות-#.m4a” /].

For example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/היכרות-#.m4a” /]המפגש הראשון הוא מפגש היכרות.

The first meetup is a getting-to-know-you meetup.

להכיר is a הפעיל verb of the root נ.כ.ר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/היכרות-#.m4a” /] meaning foreign: when we become familiar with someone, we make them no longer foreign to us.
