You may know the Hebrew word for hotel – מלון[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/מלונה-#.m4a” /].

For example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/מלונה-#.m4a” /]ישנו במלון חמישה כוכבים בים המלח.

We stayed (slept) in a five-star hotel at the Dead Sea.

מלון comes from the root ל.ו.נ[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/מלונה-#.m4a” /] meaning staying overnight. A related word is מלונה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/מלונה-#.m4a” /], which in biblical times referred to a booth from which people would watch over a field at night – but in Modern Hebrew means doghouse.

For example:

In the winter the dog sleeps in the doghouse.

מלונה also means kennel.
