how to say “cruise” in Hebrew
having trouble seeing the print?
Yesterday a tragedy took place off the coast of Italy, where a cruise ship sank, killing at least five people and possibly many more.
The Hebrew word for cruise is שַׁיִט (SHAH-yeet). Its root is ש.ו.ט (sh.w.t), the concept of traveling by water or sailing. To sail is לָשׁוּט (lah-SHOOT), a simple פעל verb. ש.י.ט is also the root of the word מַשָּׁט (mah-SHAHT), flotilla.
שַׁיִט is also used to refer to the act of sailing or boating.
