how to say “barbed wire” in Hebrew
having trouble seeing the print?
This one’s for Lisa, who stumped me last night when we she asked what that –

– was called in Hebrew.
So I looked it up. חוּט תַּיִל (khoot TAH-yeel) is barbed wire, where חוט means wire.
גֶּדֶר תַּיִל (GHEH-dehr TAH-yeel) is barbed wire fence, where גדר means fence (or, in this pronunciation, fence of).
Thus תיל is the word for barbed. Its origin remains a mystery to me – it’s not Biblical (neither Hebrew nor Aramaic). It could be Mishnaic.
If someone out there knows, I’d be happy to receive an email from you.
