When we talk about גבוה-tall / high up
it’s clear what is “tall” (refers to)
for English speakers it is clear
Tall it is simple … tall
like “this house is relatively tall”
not the tallest in the neighborhood
but relatively tall
A person can be tall
And that’s “tall”
But short, In English, can be interpreted
into two different things in Hebrew
You can say that a person is short or a house is short/low
or a thing is short/low, or a giraffe is short
or tall, actually…
But when we talk about short in the sense of distance
then we use the word קצר
for example, “the thumb is the shortest finger
among the fingers”
