Hey dear friends
On the Seder night, we are used
to talking about the ten plagues
blood, frogs, lice, swarm, etc.
All the plagues that appear in the Torah
and also appear in the Passover Haggadah
we call them the ten “strikings”
but the Torah speaks
not about “strikings”, but about “plagues”
So why do we actually call them “strikings”
and in the Torah it is written “plagues”?
Because in the Torah we do not count them one by one
However, when we sit on Seder night
we count them:
Blood, frog, lice, swarm, pestilence, etc.
Maybe that is the reason
Anyway, in modern Hebrew
when we talk about “oh, what a big problem
fell on us”, we talk about a “striking”
as in the language of Sages
But when we talk about a pandemic
we usually talk about something health-related
global, as we, unfortunately,
have become accustomed for almost a year
