it’s incorrect – one should say, המלך המשיח (with a ה before the first word)
But people say מלך המשיח (without the ה)
because in the past
in the Middle Ages
and in the days of the Mishnah even
Hebrew was a little different
and grammar was a little different
linguistic patterns were different
Another example of something like this
today we say בתי כנסת (synagogues)
when talking about more than one synagogue
but in the past they would say בתי כנסיות
and if you say it today it is still understood
and it is not really considered a mistake
also מלך המשיח is not really considered a mistake
