Hey dear friends
word “(a piece of) bedding” and “linens”
comes – come – from the root י.צ.ע
and you may have already noticed that
that מצע sounds a bit like להציע-to offer/suggest
or “an offer/suggestion”
and really – these words are all related
because they have the same root – י.צ.ע
So what is the connection between them?
להציע in the original sense
was to spread things out on, say, a bed
and today, when we offer/suggest something
when I offer a deal
or I offer a job
or I offer food, say
then actually, it’s as if I’m laying out the possibilities
on top of something
So, all these words are related
They started so in the physical sense
To lay things out physically on top of something else
and this is מצעים-linens
and arrived at the more abstract sense
of an offer/suggestion such as a price quote
