the words east and west
are related to the sun
east is the place where the sun rises
and west is the place where the sun sets in the
evening (ערב)
but what about north and south?
let’s start with the south
there are those who say that דרום is a compound
of the words דר and רום
רום – that is, height
and דר – is a synonym for גר – resides
meaning that when the sun is in a high place
in “rom”
when it “lives” there
it’s the middle of the day, and it (the sun) is located in the south
north, however
is probably not related to the location of the sun
rather, צפון is a mountain
in the northern region of the Middle East
and it was considered the place of pagan gods
like a Mount Olympus
of the Middle East
