I wrote that it could be
that the word שמיכה – that is something you cover up with
and סמיכה that new rabbis get
are related to each other
but how can it be, if their root is different?
that the first letter of שמיכה
that we snuggle up with
is שׂ
and the first letter of סמיכה – rabbinical ordination
is ס?
two different letters
indeed, about three thousand years ago
they probably pronounced the letter שׂ
in a different way than ס
according to my professor at Yeshiva University
of Hebrew phonology
they used to pronounce the letter שׂ
as something like..
which is a bit similar to שׁ (sh)
and therefore it’s actually the same letter as שׁ
over time, the sound..
or whatever it was
got lost
and in its place, people started saying s
so there are words
that in one place in the Bible
are written with ס
and in another place is written with שׂ
so it may be that rabbinic ordination
is really related to the blanket we cover ourselves in
