The most common Hebrew word for chef is שף[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/שף-#.m4a” /], as in:

But what is a chef anyway? This French word is related to the English chief – in this case, the chief of the kitchen, the head cook. So in Hebrew we also use טבח מומחה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/שף-#.m4a” /] – expert cook to refer to a chef, or טבחית מומחית[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/שף-#.m4a” /] if she’s a woman.

In recent years, the Israel Defense Force started to recognize the importance of the chefs in their ranks and began calling the position אשף מטבח[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/שף-#.m4a” /] – kitchen wizard. A female kitchen wizard is אשפית מטבח[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/שף-#.m4a” /].
