וכאן זה קצת מוזר, כי “לילה” מסתיימת
בקמץ ה’, ב”אה”, אז למה
אומרים בעצם “לילה טוב”?
כי לא כל מה שמסתיים בקמץ ה’
זה לשון נקבה – “לילה”, למרות שהיא
נראית כמו מילה בלשון נקבה
היא בעצם מילה בלשון זכר
למה? ככה. כי בעברית לא הכול
הולך לפי כללים שאנחנו מכירים
כי הכללים הם בעצם תיאור
של המציאות (הלשונית), לא המציאות עצמה
אותו דבר עם “עדשים”, ש”עדשים”
אומנם בלשון יחיד זה “עדשה”
ברבים היא “עדשים” כשמדברים על lentils
אבל כשאומרים
אומרים “עדשים רבות”
זהו חברים, להתראות

Hey dear friends
How do you say “a nice place”
in Hebrew?
And how do you say “nice places”?
We say יפים and not יפות because
מקום is (grammatically) masculine
even if in the plural the word looks
like it’s feminine, as in מקומות
in the singular it’s מקום, and therefore masculine
We say מקומות יפים and not מקומות יפות
Same thing with שולחן-table – (we say)
שולחנות גדולים-big tables
not שולחנות גדולות (grammatically wrong)
But how do you say “good night”?
And here it’s a bit strange, because לילה ends in
an ah sound with a ה, so why do we
actually say לילה טוב?
Because not everything that ends in ah-ה
is in the feminine – לילה, even though it
looks like a word in the feminine
is actually a word in the masculine
Why? Because. Because in Hebrew not everything
goes according to rules that we know
because the rules are actually a description
of (linguistic) reality, not reality itself
Same thing with עדשים-lentils, that עדשים
in the singular is עדשה
and in the plural is עדשים when referring to lentils
But when we say
we say עדשים רבות
