In the US, conservative is almost synonymous with politically right-wing. In Israel, someone conservative – שמרן[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /] or שמרנית[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /] – refers to the personality trait meaning of the word, while ימני[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /] (masculine) or ימנית[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /] (feminine) is someone right-wing.

For example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /]הוא מאוד שמרן, מעדיף ללכת על בטוח.

He’s very much a conservative, preferring to go on what’s sure.

Instead of calling him a conservative, we could describe him as such, saying:

הוא מאוד שמרני[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /] – he’s very conservative.

In Israel, the Jewish Conservative Movement is not called by the literal translation התנועה השמרנית[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /], but rather התנועה המסורתית[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/שמרן-#.m4a” /] – the Traditional Movement.
