how to say “baking” in Hebrew
having trouble seeing the print?
I just made a pot of delicious rice with raisins and pine nuts for שַׁבָּת – Shabbat. It came out pretty good, if I do say so myself. That’s בִּשּׁוּל (bee-SHOOL) – cooking, the abstract noun of the active-intensive פיעל verb, לְבַשַּׁל.
I haven’t yet graduated, however, to baking. In Hebrew, it’s אֲפִיָּה (ah-fee-YAH), of the simple פעל verb, לֶאֱפוֹת (leh-eh-FOHT).
Likewise, a bakery is called a מַאֲפִיָּה (mah-ah-fee-YAH), as in מַאֲפִיַּת אַנְגֶ’ל (mah-ah-fee-YAHT AHN-jel) – Angel’s Bakery, serving the people of Israel and what was then called Palestine (the name the Romans gave to the Land of Israel long before Mohammed was born) since 1927.
שבת שלום וסוף שבוע נעים לכולם!Shabbat Shalom and a pleasant weekend to all!
