If you’ve taken our Level 1 course, you know the Hebrew word for to come – לבוא[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/הבא-2.m4a” /], a simple hollow verb of the root ב.ו.א[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/הבא-3.m4a” /].
For example:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/הבא-4.m4a” /]אתם רוצים לבוא איתנו?
Do you guys want to come with us?
Using this word, Hebrew expresses the idea of next – in line, upcoming, etc. – with a form of הבא[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/הבא-1.m4a” /] – literally, the coming.
For example:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/הבא-5.m4a” /]אנחנו באים בשבוע הבא.
We’re coming next week.
And:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/הבא-6.m4a” /]פונים שמאלה בפנייה הבאה, ואחר כך נוסעים ישר.
(You/they/we) turn left at the next turn, and then go straight.
Likewise, the world to come is עולם הבא[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/הבא-7.m4a” /].
