The Hebrew word for information, מידע[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/מידע-מסווג-2.m4a” /], comes from the root י.ד.ע[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/מידע-מסווג-3.m4a” /] meaning knowing.

For example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/מידע-מסווג-4.m4a” /]למידע נוסף, יש להקיש אחת.

For more information, (one must) press one.

But what about the word for classified – restricted to only certain people, or a type or class of people? For that, Hebrew employs the word סוג[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/מידע-מסווג-5.m4a” /] – type, using its three letters to form the passive-intensive word מסווג[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/מידע-מסווג-6.m4a” /]. Thus classified information is מידע מסווג[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/מידע-מסווג-1.m4a” /].

For example:

Over the course of our research we stumbled upon classified information.

You may have noticed that in the Hebrew title of this post, מסווג appears with only one ו letter. That’s because the vowels there indicate how to pronounce the word. In the unvocalized body of this post, as well as most other places where you’ll see the word, מסווג appears with an extra ו[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/מידע-מסווג-8.m4a” /] to guide you in pronouncing it properly.
