depressed - בדיכאון

When I was in graduate school for psychology, whenever I would read about a psychiatric disorder, I would start to see the symptoms in myself. If I was learning about paranoid schizophrenia, I would start imagining that people were stalking me. If it was anxiety, I’d get jittery. And when we learned about depression, my life would turn into dull monotony. I later heard that I wasn’t alone in the experience.

Now, I’m not trying to get you depressed. But I would like you to know the Hebrew word for depressed, in case you ever need to use it.

Literally speaking, מדוכא[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/בדיכאון-2.m4a” /] means depressed, but the common expression is בדיכאון[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/בדיכאון-1.m4a” /] – literally, in depression. The root ד.כ.א[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/בדיכאון-3.m4a” /] means crushing.

For example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/בדיכאון-4.m4a” /]אל תדברו איתי היום, אני בדיכאון.

Don’t (plural) talk to me today, I’m depressed.

Sometimes you’ll hear Israelis shorten the word and say אני בדיקי[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/בדיכאון-5.m4a” /] to mean that they’re depressed.

Depression itself is דיכאון[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/בדיכאון-6.m4a” /], for example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/בדיכאון-7.m4a” /]התעמלות היא תרופה טבעית לדיכאון.

Exercise is a natural remedy for depression.
