Hello dear friends
when we want to talk about “vocal cords” you
usually say מיתרי הקול
which is actually “THE vocal cords”
When we want to talk about any (not “the”) vocal cords
as we usually use the term
we add some adjective after it
we just say מיתרי קול-vocal cords
for example, “he has very strong vocal cords”
So why add the ה before קול-voice
in the phrase מיתרי הקול?
Because this is how it works in סמיכות-the construct state:
when there are two nouns one after the other
that are connected in an “of” relationship
the word of, for example, like של (of) in Hebrew
say, מיתרים של קול – cords of voice
we say מיתרי קול (without the ה)
Or when we say “the strings of voice”
we don’t need two ה’s
One ה is enough in the last word
מיתרי הקול
and the word מיתרים we cut down to מיתרי
in the construct state, because that’s how it works in the plural
