A couple of months ago I introduced the Hebrew word for distance – מֶרְחָק (mehr-KHAHK).

With the Olympics in full swing, now’s the time to introduce an expression that means to go the distance or to run astoundingly fast and far – לִגְמוֹא מֶרְחָק (leeg-MOH mehr-KHAHK).

This phrase means, literally, to swallow distance. The word לגמוא, an active-simple פעל verb appearing in Biblical Hebrew, is a poetic synonym of לִבְלוֹעַ (leev-LOH-ah) meaning to swallow.

אריק איינשטיין Arik Einstein uses this expression in his feel-good song, אוֹהֵב לִהְיוֹת בַּבַּיִת(I) Like to be Home (oh-HEV lee-heh-YOHT bah-BAH-yeet). Check it out!
