[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/הישרדות-#.m4a” /]הִשָּׂרְדוּת
The Hebrew word for to survive is לשרוד[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/הישרדות-#.m4a” /], used both literally and in an exaggerated sense, as in:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/הישרדות-#.m4a” /]זה שבוע קשה, אני לא בטוח אם אני אשרוד אותו.
This is a hard week, I’m not sure I’ll survive it.
Now, לשרוד[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/הישרדות-#.m4a” /] is a פעל verb, so we would expect to see the noun form – survival – be שרידה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/הישרדות-#.m4a” /]. And the truth is that שרידה does exist, but the far more widely-used term is הישרדות[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/הישרדות-#.m4a” /]. It’s so widely-used, in fact, that it has its own reality show (the Israeli version of Survivor):
