In English, we talk about the disputed territories in Judea and Samaria. In Hebrew, territories are called שְׁטָחִים (sheh-tah-KHEEM), while one territory is called a שֶׁטַח (SHEH-tahkh). This is also the term used in geometry for the area of a shape. The root ש.ט.ח (sh.t.kh) is an ancient Semitic one, meaning to spread out; thus an area or a territory is something spread out, often flat.

It follows that the word for flat (spread out) itself is שָׁטוּח (shah-TOO-ahkh) in the masculine and שְׁטוּחָה (sheh-too-KHAH) in the feminine.
