מַחְסוֹם

This word, of the Biblical-Hebrew root ח.ס.מ (kh.s.m), means barrier or blockade – like those that Israel set up to keep terrorists out.

An example:

כְּדֵי לְהַגִּיעַ לָעִיר מוֹדִיעִין מִכְּבִישׁ 443, צָרִיךְ לַעֲבוֹר מַחְסוֹם.

In order to get to the city Modiin from the 443 road, one must pass a blockade.

מחסום is a barrier in both the physical and the abstract senses. It comes from the verb to block – לַחְסוֹם (lahkh-SOHM). An example of this verb in (passive) action:

הָרְגָשׁוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ חֲסוּמִים – קָשֶׁה לְדַבֵּר אִתּוֹ.
His feelings are blocked – it’s hard to talk with him.
