The English word extension has several meanings, but we’ll focus on only one of them today – extension in the sense of making something longer. The word for that is הארכה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/הארכה-#.m4a” /] of the root א.ר.כ[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/הארכה-#.m4a” /] meaning length (you may know the related word ארוך[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/הארכה-#.m4a” /] – long).

For example:

I (m) was supposed to hand in the paper (work) today, but I got an extension.

הארכה is a noun form of the הפעיל verb להאריך[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/הארכה-#.m4a” /] – to extend/elongate. For practice using this verb, watch today’s video.

Note that הארכה and להאריך sound just like הערכה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/הארכה-#.m4a” /] – appreciation and להעריך[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/הארכה-#.m4a” /] – to appreciate when spoken by the average Israeli, but they are from different roots and are unrelated.
