פַּעֲמוֹן

opening soon in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv!

This one’s for Sarah in Tel Aviv.

The Torah portion to be read this Shabbat by Jews around the world describes the garments worn by the priests in the Temple service. Among a few objects dangling from the coat of the high priest was a series of bells that would chime as the faithful servant would walk through the holy chambers, announcing his presence.

פעמון
Israel’s liberty bell,
פַּעֲמוֹן הַדְּרוֹר(pah-ah-MOHN hah-deh-ROHR)

The word used then as well as today for bell is פַּעֲמוֹן (pah-ah-MOHN). It derives from the word פַּעַם (PAH-ahm) meaning instance: the clapper inside the פעמון swing back and forth, instance after instance, hitting the body of the פעמון, creating a sound.

שבת שלום וסוף שבוע נעים לכולם!
Shabbat Shalom and a pleasant weekend to all!
